Elijah to Elisha: God of the Next Generation

Aug 30, 2026    Dr. Julie Geddes

What are you doing today that will impact someone's faith tomorrow?

In this powerful message, Dr. Julie Geddes explores God's heart for the next generation through the story of Elijah and Elisha. Scripture repeatedly calls God's people to tell the next generation about His faithfulness, His power, and the great things He has done. Passing on our faith isn't simply about what we teach—it's about what we model, how we live, and the people we intentionally invest in.

Through the relationship between Elijah and Elisha, Dr. Geddes shares four practical ways we can invest in the next generation: passionately pursuing God, praying for divine appointments, planting seeds through our presence, and promoting the gifting God has placed in others.

The story of Elijah and Elisha reminds us that God's work doesn't stop with one generation. There is a mantle to pass, a faith to model, and a generation waiting to discover the God who has been faithful to us.

💬 Key Thought:

"Your greatest contribution to the Kingdom of God may not be something you do, but someone you raise." — Andy Stanley

📖 Scriptures:

Psalm 145:4 | Psalm 78:4–8 | 1 Kings 19:11–13 | 1 Kings 19:16, 19–21 | 2 Kings 2:9–14

📖 How to Invest in the Next Generation:

1. Passionately Pursue God

Elijah's encounter with God reminds us that pursuing His presence means listening for His voice—even when He speaks through a gentle whisper.

2. Pray for Divine Appointments

God directed Elijah toward Elisha, showing how intentional relationships can become part of God's greater purpose.

3. Plant Seeds with Your Presence

Elijah and Elisha walked together, served together, and experienced God's power together. Our presence can make an eternal difference in someone else's life.

4. Promote Their Gifting

Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah's spirit, and ultimately picked up the mantle Elijah left behind. Investing in others means recognizing, encouraging, and making room for the gifts God has placed within them.
