Never Give In
What happens when the Church becomes so accustomed to less that it no longer realizes how much it has surrendered?
In “Never Give In,” Dr. Bill Shuler delivers a challenging call for Christians to recover the biblical picture of what it means to follow Jesus. The Church was never intended to simply blend into the culture around it. Jesus called His people to be a distinctive presence—to carry His truth, His power, His hope, and His presence into the world.
Using the picture of Israel in Babylon from Psalm 137, Dr. Bill highlights a sobering reality: the Israelites didn't destroy their harps—they simply hung them up. In the same way, Christians may not completely abandon their faith, but can gradually become accustomed to less. We can retain the label of Christian while losing the authenticity, power, joy, and witness that should accompany a life transformed by Christ.
Dr. Bill examines the warning of 2 Timothy 3:5 about having “a form of godliness” while denying its power and challenges the Church to move beyond appearance and image. Authentic Christianity goes deeper than attending church or saying the right things. It is about becoming people whose lives genuinely demonstrate that they have encountered Jesus.
The message then turns to 1 Corinthians 11:1 and the example of the Apostle Paul: “Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ.” Our lives should point people toward Jesus. The world doesn't simply need Christians who can talk about faith—it needs believers whose lives demonstrate an authentic relationship with Christ.
Through the story of Paul and Silas in Acts 16, we see what this looks like under pressure. Beaten, imprisoned, and chained, they refused to lose their song. At midnight they prayed and sang hymns to God while the other prisoners listened. When the earthquake came and the prison doors opened, they stayed and ultimately became instruments through which the jailer encountered the Gospel.
Paul and Silas didn't settle. They didn't become merely a social club. They were the Church on the scene, carrying God's presence, power, encouragement, and hope.
This message is a call to never give in and never give up—to refuse to hang up our spiritual “harps,” to remain faithful when circumstances are difficult, and to live out the Gospel authentically so that the next generation can see the power of a genuine relationship with Jesus.
