Time to Act
Dr. Bill Shuler
The Power of the Holy Spirit for Witness
A shocking statistic reveals that the average churchgoer hears 4,000 sermons, sings 20,000 songs, participates in 8,000 public prayers, yet leads zero people to Jesus. This isn't meant as condemnation, but as a wake-up call to the incredible power available to every believer through the Holy Spirit.
What Does It Mean to Be Filled with the Holy Spirit?
The Book of Acts chronicles the acts of early followers of Jesus - and it's a book that continues today through believers like you and me. In Acts 1:1-11, we see Jesus preparing His disciples for what would come after His ascension.
After His resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples for 40 days, giving "many convincing proofs that he was alive" and speaking about the kingdom of God. But before leaving them, He gave a crucial command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit" (Acts 1:4-5).

The Promise of Power
Jesus told His followers: "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. And you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8). The word "power" here is the Greek word "Dunamis" - where we get the word dynamite.
This isn't just a nice thought or feeling. This is explosive, life-changing power that enables ordinary people to do extraordinary things for God's kingdom.

Why Do We Stand Looking Into the Sky?
After Jesus ascended into heaven, the disciples stood staring upward until angels appeared and asked, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking into the sky?" (Acts 1:11). The angels weren't criticizing their amazement at the supernatural event - they were challenging them to act on what they had witnessed.
To supernatural beings like angels, miraculous events are normal. They were essentially saying: "Don't just stand there observing. Let this change your life forever. You're going to be witnesses, empowered by the Holy Spirit."

Moving Beyond Political Expectations
The disciples still didn't fully understand Jesus' mission. They asked, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" (Acts 1:6). They were still thinking politically - expecting Jesus to establish an earthly kingdom and overthrow Roman rule.
But Jesus came to establish His kingdom in human hearts, not on earthly thrones. He wants to be on the throne of your heart and mine. This is the difference between temporary political power and eternal spiritual transformation.

How Do We Become Effective Witnesses?
The early church turned the world upside down, and we can learn from their example. But it didn't happen through human effort alone - it required the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Pattern: Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the Ends of the Earth
Jesus outlined a specific pattern for witness:
This progression challenges us to think bigger and move beyond our comfort zones. We're not meant to cluster only on Sunday mornings - there's a day-by-day reality of the Holy Spirit working through our lives.
- Jerusalem - Where Jesus was crucified and His followers faced persecution
- Judea - The larger surrounding area where Galileans weren't well-received
- Samaria - Among people considered enemies
- The ends of the earth - Beyond their comfort zone entirely
This progression challenges us to think bigger and move beyond our comfort zones. We're not meant to cluster only on Sunday mornings - there's a day-by-day reality of the Holy Spirit working through our lives.
What Does Waiting Look Like?
When Jesus told the disciples to "wait," this wasn't passive sitting around. Acts 1:12-26 shows us what active waiting looks like:
Active waiting means being expectant that God is going to move while preparing ourselves to be used by Him.
- They joined together constantly in prayer
- They engaged in preaching and teaching
- They made important decisions (replacing Judas)
- They prepared for what God was going to do
Active waiting means being expectant that God is going to move while preparing ourselves to be used by Him.
The Importance of Being Emptied First
Dwight L. Moody, who preached to over 10 million people, said: "I firmly believe that the moment our hearts are emptied of selfishness and ambition and self-seeking and everything that is contrary to God's law, the Holy Spirit will come and fill every corner of our hearts... There must be an emptying before there can be a filling."
Historical Examples of Holy Spirit Transformation
Throughout history, God has used the filling of the Holy Spirit to transform ministries and lives:
John Wesley's Aldersgate Experience
John Wesley, who rode over 250,000 miles by horseback and preached over 40,000 sermons, experienced a turning point at age 34. After a discouraging mission trip to America, he attended a service where he wrote in his journal: "I felt my heart strangely warmed." This Holy Spirit filling changed everything about his ministry and set him on a trajectory of being greatly used by God.
Billy Graham's Transformation
Even Billy Graham, who preached to nearly 215 million people, experienced a crucial Holy Spirit filling that revolutionized his ministry. In 1946, after meeting with evangelist Stephen Alford, Graham spent two days studying Scripture and seeking God. In a small hotel room in Wales, Graham cried out to God in total dedication. Alford later described: "All heaven broke loose in that dreary little room... Billy began walking back and forth saying, 'I have it. I'm filled. This is the turning point of my life. This will revolutionize my ministry.'"
That night, Graham preached with new authority and power. The audience came forward even before the invitation was given, and practically the entire congregation rushed forward when it was given.

The Value of Every Soul
Oskar Schindler saved approximately 1,200 Jews from Nazi concentration camps, spending his fortune on bribes to keep people off the death trains. Yet at the end, he broke down saying, "I could have saved more." He realized his car could have been worth 10 more lives, a pin could have saved one more person.
This challenges us to consider: What is the value of a soul? What is the value of your family members, coworkers, and friends? Jesus placed ultimate value on every soul, and our purpose is to make Him known as Savior, deliverer, and healer.

Recognizing Felt Needs
Every person has basic felt needs:
We can speak into these felt needs as the beginning of witness. Sometimes it starts with simply saying, "I believe in you" or "I see something special in you." Love people well, and they'll want to know the source of that love.
- The need to be loved
- The need for significance
- The need to know their life matters

Life Application
This week, challenge yourself to move beyond passive church attendance to active Holy Spirit partnership. Begin each day by praying, "God, I want to be used by you. If you'll use me, give me the right words or at least help me love somebody well so they ask questions about you."
Consider these questions:
Remember, first comes the Holy Spirit, then comes powerful witness. You have the Holy Spirit the moment you ask Jesus to be your Savior, but there's also the infilling of the Holy Spirit for empowerment in witness and righteous living. If you've never experienced this filling, ask God right now to empty you of self and fill you completely with His Spirit. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is available to work through your life today.
Consider these questions:
- Am I filled with the Holy Spirit, or am I trying to witness in my own strength?
- Who in my life right now needs to experience God's love through me?
- What would change in my daily routine if I truly believed God wanted to use me as His witness?
- Am I more focused on observing God's work or participating in it?
Remember, first comes the Holy Spirit, then comes powerful witness. You have the Holy Spirit the moment you ask Jesus to be your Savior, but there's also the infilling of the Holy Spirit for empowerment in witness and righteous living. If you've never experienced this filling, ask God right now to empty you of self and fill you completely with His Spirit.
