Gaining Supernatural Focus

When God Interrupts Your Routine: Lessons from Peter and John's Divine Encounter

Sometimes the most extraordinary moments begin on the most ordinary days. This truth comes alive in Acts chapter 3, where we witness the first miracle performed by Jesus' followers after Pentecost - a powerful reminder that God often breaks into our daily routines with divine purpose.

What Happens When We Allow God to Interrupt Our Plans?

Peter and John were simply following their daily routine, heading to the temple for the 3 PM prayer time. It seemed like any other ordinary day. Yet this moment would become a pivotal point in the early church's history.

The scripture tells us: "One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer at three in the afternoon" - Acts 3:1. What started as routine worship became a divine appointment that would impact eternity.

The Power of Being Available to God's Agenda

We must be willing to allow God to break through our routines, even our spiritual routines. When God wants to speak to us or use us, we need to be ready to step aside from our agenda to embrace His purposes.

As Proverbs 16:9 reminds us: "In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps." God is present in the smallness of our steps. When we're obedient step by step, we align ourselves with His greater plan, even when we can't see the full picture.

How Does God Establish Our Steps?

Psalm 37:23 declares: "If the Lord delights in a man's way, he makes his steps firm." When God delights in our way of living, He establishes our steps. This means His blessing is present in where we are and what we're doing, even during seasons filled with question marks.

This gives us purpose and establishes us in Holy Spirit activity. It's crucial that we please God and quickly repent when we fall short. If you've made a bad decision, don't compound it with another bad decision. Instead, follow it with what's right, then continue making right choices to build character.

Why Was Prayer Central to This Miracle?

The timing wasn't coincidental - 3 PM was the hour Jesus died on the cross. The early believers gathered at this specific time, connecting their prayers to the holy purpose of Christ's sacrifice.

Prayer is never haphazard. It's tied to God's plans and purposes. The Holy Spirit guides us in these plans daily, and our obedience to pray - like these early believers' commitment to the 3 PM prayer time - positions us to be part of the miracles God wants to perform.

What Can We Learn from the Crippled Man's Story?

The man at the Beautiful Gate had been crippled from birth. For forty years, he was carried to the same spot daily to beg. Interestingly, Jesus had likely passed by him many times during His earthly ministry, yet the healing didn't happen then.

God's Timing vs. Our Understanding

This raises profound questions about God's sovereignty and timing. Why wasn't this man healed when Jesus walked by? The answer lies in understanding that God has a grand strategy and eternal plan. His timing is perfect, even when we don't understand it in the moment.

The contrast is striking - a suffering human being positioned beneath a gate so beautiful it inspired its name. This represents all of humanity: we all have things that have "crippled" us or knocked us off balance, yet we're created in God's image and destined for His beautiful purposes.

How Do We Develop Supernatural Focus?

Acts 3:4 tells us: "Peter looked straight at him, as did John." Church people had passed by this beggar before, but Peter and John took notice in God's timing and focused in.

We need to sharpen the skill of supernatural focus - calling out to God for a discerning spirit so we can:

  • See people through His eyes
  • Speak to them from His heart
  • Recognize when God is tapping our hearts to encourage someone
  • Move with God's plan and timing

As we become spiritually sensitive and walk with the Holy Spirit, we begin to see what others miss and move in ways that bring healing and hope.

What Authority Do We Have as Believers?

Peter's response was remarkable: "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk" - Acts 3:6.

Notice there's no record that they prayed with the man first. This doesn't diminish prayer's importance, but shows that those walking in authority do so because of a whole life of prayer and devotion. They're ready to speak words of authority and Scripture in the moment.

Knowing What We Have in Christ

It's vital that we know what we have as believers. We have the Holy Spirit. We have Christ in us - "Christ in you, the hope of glory" - Colossians 1:27.

You can't give what you don't have, but what you do have shouldn't go untapped. Many Christians estimate difficulties based on their own resources and attempt little. But God's giants have been weak people who did great things because they reckoned on His power and presence with them.

What Was the Result of This Divine Encounter?

The healing was complete and immediate. Acts 3:8 describes the man "walking and jumping and praising God." This three-fold response - walking, jumping, and praising - represents where we should bring people: to delight in an encounter with God.

This miracle became the first evidence to religious leaders that Jesus' presence, influence, and ministry didn't die but was alive and active in His followers.

Life Application

This week, challenge yourself to pray each morning: "God, I have an agenda today, but whatever is on Your heart, whatever is Your agenda, I will step aside from my plans to do Your purposes." Be willing to let God interrupt your routine.

Practice supernatural focus by asking God for a discerning spirit. Look for opportunities to see people through His eyes and speak encouragement from His heart. Remember that you carry the same Holy Spirit that empowered Peter and John.

Ask yourself these questions:
  • Am I willing to let God interrupt my daily routine for His purposes?
  • Do I truly understand what I have in Christ and the authority I carry as a believer?
  • How can I develop greater spiritual sensitivity to see people and situations through God's eyes?
  • What "crippled" areas in my life or others' lives need the healing touch of Jesus?

God wants to use ordinary people in ordinary moments to accomplish extraordinary things. The question is: will you be available when He interrupts your routine?
