Her Name was Jochebed

In the book of Exodus, we find a powerful story of faith, courage, and maternal love through the account of Moses' mother, Jochebed. Her actions would ultimately shape the destiny of the Israelite nation and provide timeless lessons about trusting God in difficult circumstances.

Who Was Jochebed and Why Is Her Story Important?

Though her name is only mentioned once in Exodus 6:20, Jochebed's impact on biblical history is profound. As a Levite woman living during a time of severe oppression in Egypt, she faced an impossible choice when she gave birth to Moses. The Pharaoh had ordered all Hebrew baby boys to be killed, yet she chose to protect her son at great personal risk.

What Can We Learn About Faith During Difficult Times?

Jochebed's story demonstrates several key principles:
  • God is present even in our darkest moments
  • What enemies intend for harm, God can turn for good
  • Sometimes protecting God's purposes requires great courage and risk
  • Small acts of faith can have world-changing consequences

How Did Jochebed's Actions Show Her Faith?

When Jochebed saw that Moses was "no ordinary child" (Acts 7:20), she took three significant steps of faith:
  • She hid him for three months, risking her own life
  • She created a plan to save him using a waterproof basket
  • She trusted God's providence when placing him in the Nile

What Role Did God's Providence Play?

God's hand was evident throughout this story:
  • Pharaoh's daughter found Moses
  • Moses' sister was able to arrange for Jochebed to nurse him
  • Jochebed was even paid to care for her own son
  • She had approximately five years to instill faith in young Moses

Life Application

This story challenges us to consider how we're protecting and nurturing God's purposes in our own families and lives. Here are some questions to reflect on:
  • What "seeds of faith" are you planting in your family?
  • Where might God be asking you to take bold steps of faith?
  • How can you better trust God's providence in difficult situations?

This week, consider taking these practical steps:
  • Identify one area where you need to trust God more fully
  • Look for opportunities to share your faith with family members
  • Take time to thank those who have planted seeds of faith in your life
  • Make a commitment to daily prayer and Bible study
Remember, just as Jochebed's seemingly small acts of faith had far-reaching consequences, your faithful actions today can impact generations to come.
