Sermon Recap | May 24th, 2026
Jesus is called the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6), and His peace "transcends all understanding" and "will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:7). Peace isn't the absence of conflict—it's the presence of Almighty God in your life.

Understanding the Gifts of the Holy Spirit: A Guide for Every Believer
On Pentecost Sunday, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit and the incredible gifts He brings to believers. While many Christians understand that the Holy Spirit lives within them, fewer understand the specific gifts the Spirit offers to empower and equip us for ministry and daily life.
What Are the Gifts of the Holy Spirit?
The gifts of the Spirit, called "charismata" in Greek, literally mean "gifts of holy grace." These are supernatural abilities given by the Holy Spirit to believers for the purpose of serving others and building up the church.
As Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 12:1, "Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed." God desires that we understand these gifts, not remain confused or misinformed about them.

Who Can Receive These Gifts?
According to 1 Corinthians 12:7-11, these gifts are available to every believer as distributed by the Holy Spirit. We don't choose our gifts - the Holy Spirit distributes them "to each one just as he determines."
The purpose is clear: "Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good" (1 Corinthians 12:7). These gifts aren't for personal glory but for serving others and strengthening the body of Christ.

The Nine Gifts of the Spirit
The gifts fall into three main categories, each serving a unique purpose in God's kingdom work.
Revelation Gifts: Seeing with God's Eyes
These gifts provide supernatural insight and understanding beyond human knowledge.
Word of Wisdom
This is supernatural perspective on how to accomplish God's will in specific situations. It's spiritual intuition that provides divine guidance for applying God's will in any circumstance.
A powerful example comes from Acts 16:9-10, where Paul received a vision: "During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, 'Come over to Macedonia and help us.'" The Holy Spirit redirected Paul's ministry plans through this supernatural wisdom.

Word of Knowledge
This gift reveals God's heart, perspective, and will in situations. While wisdom tells us what to do, knowledge reveals what God knows about a situation that we couldn't know naturally.
Jesus demonstrated this perfectly with the woman at the well in John 4. When she claimed to have no husband, Jesus replied, "You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband" (John 4:17-18). This supernatural knowledge opened her heart to receive the Gospel.

Discerning of Spirits
This gift enables believers to detect what is truly from God's presence versus what might be deceptive or harmful, even when spoken in God's name. It's the ability to see beyond surface appearances and identify spiritual realities.
This isn't about finding fault with others, but about distinguishing between what is of God and what is not. In our day of loud voices and strong opinions, we need this gift to discern truth from deception.

Power Gifts: Demonstrating God's Strength
The second category includes gifts of faith, healing, and miracles - supernatural demonstrations of God's power working through believers.
Inspiration Gifts: Speaking God's Heart
The third category encompasses prophecy, tongues, and interpretation of tongues - gifts that communicate God's heart and purposes to His people.
How Do These Gifts Work in Practice?
These gifts operate through relationship with the Holy Spirit, not through our own effort or ability. As A.W. Tozer wisely noted, "Though every believer has the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit does not have every believer."
The key is developing a daily relationship with the Holy Spirit as your senior partner. Wake up saying, "Good morning, Holy Spirit. We walk together today." Allow the Spirit to guide and empower you throughout your day.

Why Do We Need These Gifts Today?
We live in a specific generation - the 2020s - with unique challenges and opportunities. We have one life to live, and God wants to use us effectively for His kingdom purposes right now.
The church needs a fresh outpouring of Holy Spirit power. We cannot settle for being merely an organization that gathers, listens, and disperses. We need the supernatural power of God flowing through us to impact our families, communities, and world.
As 1 Peter 4:10 reminds us, "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms."

Staying Balanced and Biblical
These gifts must always align with Scripture. Any supposed revelation or guidance that contradicts God's Word is not from the Holy Spirit. The Spirit will never lead us outside the boundaries of biblical truth.
Remember that these gifts operate through grace, which keeps us humble. We don't own these gifts - the Holy Spirit works through us. This prevents pride and maintains the proper perspective that it's God's power, not our ability.

Life Application
This week, shift your focus from just knowing about the Holy Spirit to developing a relationship with Him. Begin each day by acknowledging the Holy Spirit as your senior partner. Ask Him to guide you, give you wisdom for decisions, and use you to serve others.
Pay attention to moments when you sense God's leading or have unusual insight into situations. Practice listening for the Holy Spirit's voice and being obedient to His promptings, always testing them against Scripture.
Consider these questions as you apply this teaching:
Remember, God's divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life. The gifts of the Spirit are part of His provision to help us live effectively for His kingdom and serve others with supernatural power and love.

Consider these questions as you apply this teaching:
- Am I open to the Holy Spirit working through me in supernatural ways?
- Do I seek God's wisdom and knowledge for the situations I face, or do I rely only on my own understanding?
- How can I better discern what is truly from God versus what might be deceptive?
- Am I willing to be used by God to serve and encourage others through spiritual gifts?
- What would change in my daily life if I truly partnered with the Holy Spirit in everything I do?
Remember, God's divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life. The gifts of the Spirit are part of His provision to help us live effectively for His kingdom and serve others with supernatural power and love.
