Stick in There

In today's challenging world, encouragement is more vital than ever. While we often receive encouragement as children from our parents, that steady stream of support can diminish as we enter adulthood. However, both receiving and giving encouragement remains crucial for our spiritual and emotional wellbeing.

Why Do We Need Encouragement?

Life inevitably brings moments of self-doubt, anxiety, and discouragement. During these times, we need to remember that we're not alone. God knows us emotionally, spiritually, and physically - in every aspect of our lives. As John 16:33 reminds us, "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

Where Should We Place Our Hope?

While many place their hope in careers, money, or relationships, true hope must be anchored in the Lord. Isaiah 40:31 tells us, "Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."

How Can We Find Encouragement in Difficult Times?

  • Align your words with God's promises
  • Put on a "garment of praise" instead of a spirit of heaviness
  • Deal honestly with your emotional state
  • Remember that God works all things together for good
  • Understand that joy and peace are fruits of the Spirit, not just feelings

What Does It Mean to Be an Encourager?

Being an encourager means becoming someone who infuses others with hope and courage. Like Barnabas, known as the "Son of Encouragement" in the Bible, we're called to stand alongside others during their struggles and support them through difficult times.

Life Application

This week, challenge yourself to become an active encourager in your community:
  • Look for opportunities to speak words of encouragement to others
  • Be present for those going through difficult times
  • Share God's promises with those who need hope
  • Practice active listening when others share their struggles
Ask yourself:
  • Who in my life needs encouragement right now?
  • How can I be more intentional about encouraging others?
  • Am I allowing God's word to encourage me in my own struggles?
  • What promises from God's word can I share with others this week?
Remember, good words are worth much but cost little. By becoming an encourager, you're not only fulfilling God's calling but also strengthening your own faith journey.
