Spiritual Gifts II | Dr. Bill Shuler Discussion Guide
Summary
In this closing message of a series on the Holy Spirit, Pastor Bill Shuler explores the gifts of the Spirit, focusing on the power gifts of faith, healing, and miracles, as well as the vocal gifts of prophecy, tongues, and interpretation of tongues.
The sermon emphasizes that these gifts are not owned or wielded by individuals but are given by the Holy Spirit according to His will and timing, all for the common good and the building up of the body of Christ. Pastor Bill draws on passages from 1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12, and Hebrews 11 to show that every believer receives a measure of faith, while the special gift of faith is a supernatural impartation to believe God in situations where doubt or fear would be the natural response.
Through personal stories, including a miraculous healing and the faith-filled journey of planting a church in the D.C. metro area around the time of 9/11, Pastor Bill illustrates what it looks like to step out in supernatural faith. The sermon also covers the ministerial gifts outlined in Ephesians 4, using the image of five fingers on a hand to represent apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. The overarching call is for believers to ask God for an impartation of faith, to believe He is still a healer, and to expect that revival can happen in their own community when ordinary people gather together and pray with sincere belief.

Intro Prayer
Heavenly Father, we come before You with open hearts and open hands. As we gather today to discuss Your Word and the gifts You have given through Your Holy Spirit, we ask that You would quiet our own thoughts and agendas. Give us ears to hear what You want to speak to each of us personally. Let this time together not simply be an exchange of ideas, but a genuine encounter with You. Holy Spirit, move among us, stir our faith, and show us where You are calling us to trust You more deeply. In Jesus' name, amen.
Ice Breaker
What is the most memorable or unexpected gift you have ever received, and why did it stand out to you?

- Romans 12:3
- Hebrews 11:6
- 1 Samuel 14:6-7

Questions
- Pastor Bill described the gifts of the Spirit as belonging to the Holy Spirit and not to us personally. How does that perspective change the way you think about using spiritual gifts in your own life?
- Every believer is given a measure of faith according to Romans 12:3, but the gift of faith is described as a special supernatural impartation for specific moments. Have you ever experienced a moment where you felt God gave you an unusual or unexpected surge of faith? What was that like?
- Jonathan and his armor bearer went into battle as an army of two, trusting that God had spoken to them. What situation in your life right now might require that kind of bold, step-out faith, even when the odds seem impossible?
- Pastor Bill shared that God heals in many ways, including through medicine, surgery, natural processes, and supernatural intervention. Why do you think it can sometimes be difficult to recognize or give God credit for healing that comes through ordinary means?
- The sermon raised the honest question of why not everyone who is prayed for is healed. How do you personally wrestle with that tension, and how does the concept of God's sovereignty and timing help or challenge you in that wrestling?
- The gift of prophecy is described as speaking to people for their strengthening, encouraging, and comfort (1 Corinthians 14:3). Have you ever received a word of encouragement from someone that felt like it came directly from God? How did it affect you?
- Pastor Bill described a prayer language rooted in Romans 8:26-27, where the Spirit intercedes for us through wordless groans when we do not know what to pray. Have you ever been in a situation where you simply did not know how to pray? How did you handle it, and what does this passage mean to you?
- Ephesians 4:11-12 lists the ministerial gifts of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers as being given to equip the body of Christ for works of service. Looking at those five roles, which one do you feel most drawn to or most reflects how God has wired you, and why?
Life Application
This week, identify one specific area of your life where fear or doubt has been louder than faith. Each day, bring that situation before God in prayer and ask Him for a fresh impartation of faith. If you feel led, reach out to a trusted friend or fellow believer and ask them to pray with you over it. Also, if God answers a prayer or brings healing in any form this week, make a point to share that testimony with someone, because sharing what God has done gives Him glory and builds faith in others around you.
Closing
Key Takeaways
- The gifts of the Spirit are not personal possessions but are given by the Holy Spirit according to His will and timing, always for the common good and the building up of the body of Christ.
- Every believer receives a measure of faith, but the special gift of faith is a supernatural impartation for specific moments when God calls someone to believe what seems naturally impossible.
- God heals in many ways, and believers are encouraged to pray for healing with confidence, knowing that God's heart toward His people has not changed and that He is still a rewarder of those who earnestly seek Him.
- The vocal gifts of prophecy, tongues, and interpretation of tongues each serve distinct purposes: prophecy strengthens and encourages believers, tongues serve as a sign for unbelievers, and the prayer language of the Spirit helps believers intercede according to the will of God even when they do not know what to pray.
- The ministerial gifts of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers are given by Christ to equip His people for works of service, with the ultimate goal of bringing the body of Christ to maturity and unity in Him.
Ending Prayer
Lord, we thank You for the time we have shared together today around Your Word. Thank You for the gifts You have placed in each person in this room, and for the reminder that those gifts come from You and are meant to serve others. We ask that You would fan into flame whatever gift You have placed within each of us. Where faith has grown small, increase it. Where healing is needed, whether in body, mind, or heart, we trust You as the God who heals. Give us the courage to step out, to pray boldly, and to believe that You are still moving in our generation. May everything we do be for the building up of Your body and the glory of Your name. In Jesus' name, amen.
