Spiritual Gifts: Part 2

Dr. Bill Shuler

Understanding the Gifts of the Spirit: Faith, Healing, and Miracles

The gifts of the Spirit are supernatural abilities given by God to empower believers for effective witness and ministry. Unlike the fruit of the Spirit (which is singular and represents Christ's character), the gifts of the Spirit are plural and diverse, distributed by the Holy Spirit according to His will and timing.

What Are the Gifts of the Spirit?

According to 1 Corinthians 12:7-11, these gifts include wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, discerning of spirits, speaking in tongues, and interpretation of tongues. The passage emphasizes that "all these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines."

These gifts are not possessions we own or wield at our own will. They are manifestations given through the Spirit for the common good of the body of Christ.

The Gift of Faith: Beyond Natural Belief

How Is the Gift of Faith Different from Regular Faith?

Every believer receives a measure of faith, as Romans 12:3 tells us: "God has distributed to each of you" a measure of faith. However, the gift of faith is something unique - it's a supernatural impartation of faith to believe God in situations where the natural response would be doubt or fear.

What Does the Gift of Faith Look Like in Action?

The story of Jonathan and his armor bearer in 1 Samuel 14 provides a powerful example. These two men faced an entire Philistine army, yet they received supernatural faith to believe God would give them victory. Jonathan said, "Perhaps the Lord will act on our behalf. Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few" (1 Samuel 14:6).

This wasn't natural confidence - it was a divine impartation of faith that enabled them to see beyond impossible circumstances. The result was miraculous: two men defeated an army, causing panic that spread throughout the enemy camp.

Why Does God Give Gifts of Healing?

How Does God Heal Today?

God heals in multiple ways - through medicine, surgery, natural processes over time, and supernatural intervention. The gifts of healing represent those moments when God intervenes supernaturally in ways that cannot be explained by natural means.

The healing of the lame beggar in Acts 3 demonstrates this supernatural intervention. Peter and John encountered a man lame from birth, and through prayer in Jesus' name, he was instantly healed - leaping, jumping, and praising God.

Why Aren't All People Healed?

This remains one of faith's mysteries. Even Jesus didn't heal everyone at the pool of Bethesda - He healed only one person despite multitudes of sick people being present. This suggests God's sovereignty and timing play crucial roles in when and how healing occurs.

James 5:14 provides guidance: "Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord." We're called to pray believing God is still a healer, while trusting His wisdom in the outcome.

Understanding Miraculous Powers

What Defines a Miracle?

A miracle is defined as supernatural intervention in the ordinary course of nature. Biblical examples include Moses parting the Red Sea, Elijah's oil that never ran out, and Jesus feeding 5,000 people with a few loaves and fish.

These interventions demonstrate God's power over natural laws and His desire to meet human needs in extraordinary ways.

The Vocal and Inspirational Gifts

What Is the Gift of Prophecy?

Prophecy means "to flow forth" and involves speaking God's heart to people. According to 1 Corinthians 14:3, "the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort."

This gift should always align with Scripture and never contradict God's Word. True prophecy brings freedom, not bondage, as "where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom" (2 Corinthians 3:17).

How Do Tongues and Interpretation Work?

The gift of tongues involves speaking in a language never learned. At Pentecost, people heard their own languages spoken by believers who had never learned them - representing 15 different ethnic groups.

While prophecy is primarily for believers, tongues serve as a sign for unbelievers (1 Corinthians 14:22). In public settings, tongues should be accompanied by interpretation so everyone can understand and be blessed.

The Five-Fold Ministry Gifts

Ephesians 4:11-12 describes ministerial gifts: "So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers to equip his people for works of service so that the body of Christ may be built up."

Using the analogy of fingers on a hand:
  • Thumb (Apostle): Can touch all other fingers; pioneers and establishes
  • Index finger (Prophet): Points out error and direction
  • Middle finger (Evangelist): Reaches furthest to those outside the church
  • Ring finger (Pastor): Loves and nurtures the flock
  • Little finger (Teacher): Focuses on details and depth of meaning

Life Application

This week, actively seek God for an increase of faith in whatever you're facing. Don't simply endure difficulties that God may want to heal or transform. Ask specifically for the gift of faith to believe God in your current circumstances.

Consider gathering with other believers to pray for healing - both physical and emotional. God can heal memories, emotions, and physical ailments. Share testimonies of God's work in your life to give Him glory and encourage others' faith.

Remember that you're living in a generation where God wants to move powerfully. Don't just read about historical revivals - believe that God can work through you today.

Questions for Reflection:
  • What situation in your life requires supernatural faith beyond your natural ability to believe?
  • How can you position yourself to be used by God through His gifts?
  • Are there areas of healing - physical, emotional, or spiritual - that you need to bring before God in faith?
  • How might God want to use you to encourage and strengthen other believers through these gifts?
