Tearing Down Strongholds

Dr. Bill Shuler

Breaking Free from Strongholds: How Knowing God Transforms Your Life

Many of us carry distorted views of God that shape how we live, love, and pursue our calling. These faulty thinking patterns, rooted in lies and deception, can become spiritual strongholds that limit our effectiveness and joy. But there's hope - when we truly know God and His ways, these strongholds crumble, and we discover the freedom Christ intended for us.

What Does It Mean to Truly Know God?

In Jeremiah 9:23-24, God makes it clear what matters most: "'Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,' declares the Lord."

Jesus himself defined eternal life as knowing God (John 17:3). This isn't merely intellectual knowledge about God - it's an intimate, personal relationship that transforms how we see ourselves and our purpose.

The Martha and Mary Principle: Choosing What Is Better

In Luke 10:41-42, Jesus addresses Martha's busyness with these words: "'Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed - or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.'"

Martha emphasized the practical - her work, her tasks, her endless to-do lists. Mary emphasized the devotional - sitting at Jesus' feet, focusing on heart connection with Him. While both approaches have value, Jesus clearly states that Mary chose "what is better."

Moving Beyond the Status Quo

Most people prioritize tasks and lists, but those who prioritize knowing God experience what is better. This means immersing yourself in the unique calling God has placed on your life - something only you can do in the way God has formed you to do it in this generation.

How Our View of God Shapes Everything

How we view our Heavenly Father and how we believe He views us matters tremendously. It shapes our entire lives. Some people see God as:

  • A cosmic waiter who exists to serve our desires
  • A harsh sheriff ready to punish any misstep
  • A demanding foreman focused only on performance
  • A weak deity trapped in a box, unable to help

But Scripture reveals God as gracious, compassionate, slow to anger, and rich in love. He exercises kindness, justice, and righteousness on earth because these are the things in which He delights.

Learning God's Ways Through His Word

Moses connected knowing God to knowing His ways. In Exodus 33:13, Moses prayed, "If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you." This reveals a crucial truth: we come to know God by understanding how He operates, His character, and His heart toward us.

David's Example of Intimate Knowledge

Psalm 145 demonstrates what it looks like to truly know God. David writes with the passion of someone in relationship, not just someone with intellectual knowledge. He declares God's greatness, meditates on His wonderful works, and celebrates His abundant goodness.

This psalm reveals God as trustworthy in all His promises, faithful in all He does, near to all who call on Him, and one who fulfills the desires of those who fear Him. This is the God we serve - not the distorted versions the enemy tries to sell us.

What Are Spiritual Strongholds?

Strongholds are faulty thinking patterns based on lies and deception. The enemy works through deception to establish these mental fortresses that distort our understanding of God and His ways. These strongholds can be rooted in past experiences, current circumstances, or fears about the future.

The Parable of the Talents: A Case Study in Strongholds

In Jesus' parable of the talents, the servant with one talent reveals his stronghold when he says, "Master, I knew you were a hard man." This warped view of the master caused him to bury what he should have invested.

His perception led to paralysis. While the other servants invested their talents and received rewards, this servant's false belief about his master's character caused him to waste his opportunity.

Billions today are doing the same - burying their God-given talents and calling because of a distorted view of who God is and how He feels about them.

The Power of God's Word to Demolish Strongholds

Second Corinthians 10:4 declares, "The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds."

Ephesians 6:17 identifies our primary weapon: "Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." This sword - actually a dagger for close, personal combat - represents the Word of God applied to our immediate circumstances, relationships, and challenges.

Speaking God's Word Over Your Life

The Word of God is the only offensive weapon in our spiritual armor. We must know Scripture well enough to speak it over our situations - our families, our work, our fears, our future. This isn't just reading about God; it's wielding His truth against the lies that try to establish strongholds in our minds.

Your True Identity in Christ

We are not defined by what we did or what others did to us in the past. We are defined by what Jesus did for us on the cross. When this revelation truly hits us, guilt and shame lose their power.

Wrong and destructive thought patterns - fear, worry, pride, sinful thoughts - must come under submission to God's Word. We take captive every thought that contradicts what God has said about us in His Word.

Remember these truths: God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). There is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). You are the head and not the tail, more than a conqueror through Him who loves you.

Life Application

This week, commit to deepening your knowledge of God through His Word. Instead of just going through the motions of daily tasks, choose what is better - prioritize time in God's presence and in Scripture. Identify any strongholds in your thinking - lies you've believed about God's character or your identity - and begin speaking God's truth over those areas.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What false beliefs about God's character am I carrying that might be limiting my faith and effectiveness?
  • Am I prioritizing the practical (like Martha) over the devotional (like Mary) in my daily life?
  • What specific lies or strongholds do I need to demolish with God's Word this week?
  • How can I move from just knowing about God to truly knowing Him in an intimate, transformational way?

Remember, you were fearfully and wonderfully made, shaped in your mother's womb, and born for such a time as this. There is a unique calling on your life that only you can fulfill. Don't let the enemy's lies keep you from investing the talents God has given you. Choose what is better, know God intimately, and watch as strongholds crumble in the power of His truth.
