The Battle is Won
Dr. Bill Shuler
Spiritual Warfare: How to Win the Battles You Can't See
Many believers today find themselves constantly under attack, choosing to "pay the bully" rather than learning how to defeat the enemy. Like the boy who decided it was cheaper to give his lunch money to the bully than take karate lessons, we often surrender what belongs to us instead of standing in the victory that's already ours.
Why Do We Face Spiritual Opposition?
The reality is that we have an opponent - God's enemy who comes to steal, kill, and destroy. But we also have Jesus on our side, and "greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world" (1 John 4:4). When we make the decision to follow Jesus, relinquishing our will to His, we become part of God's family and should not be constantly defeated by the enemy.
As believers, we need to understand that victory doesn't come through our own strength. "'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the Lord Almighty" (Zechariah 4:6). This scripture exists because our natural inclination is to try to fight battles in our own power, but true victory comes through being led by God's Spirit.

Understanding the Seen and Unseen World
Every day of our lives, there exists both a seen and an unseen world. While we're very aware of our physical senses and the tangible world around us, there's also a spiritual realm that affects our natural world more than we realize.
In the Old Testament, we see this principle at work when God gave Joshua specific instructions for conquering Jericho. "Then the Lord said to Joshua, 'See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days... on the seventh day, march around the city seven times with the priests blowing the trumpets'" (Joshua 6:2-4).
This wasn't just a physical battle - it was a supernatural one. The victory required both natural action and spiritual obedience.

What Is Spiritual Warfare?
Spiritual warfare can be defined as conflict being waged in the invisible spiritual realm that manifests in the visible physical realm. Our world involves much more than what we can see with our physical eyes - there's a supernatural realm behind everything.
Interestingly, while about 74% of adults in America say they believe in God, only 56-58% believe in Satan or the devil. This means many people acknowledge God's existence but fail to recognize that there's an active enemy working against God's purposes and His people.

How Do We Fight Spiritual Battles?
The apostle Paul gives us clear instructions in Ephesians 6:10-18 about how to engage in spiritual warfare effectively:
Be Strong in the Lord's Power
"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power" (Ephesians 6:10). The Greek word for "strong" can be translated as "allow God to fill you with his power." This isn't passive - we must actively pursue God's purposes while relying on His strength, not our own.
Put on the Full Armor of God
"Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes" (Ephesians 6:11). Notice that we must "put on" the armor - it's our responsibility. If we lack any part of the armor, we become vulnerable to the enemy's attacks.
Recognize Your Real Enemy
"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" (Ephesians 6:12).
Your fight isn't with your neighbor, boss, or difficult people in your life. While the enemy may use people to come against us, our real battle is in the spiritual realm. This is why we must learn to forgive - so we don't waste energy fighting battles in the flesh against the wrong enemy.

The Armor of God Explained
Each piece of spiritual armor serves a specific purpose in our spiritual battles:
The Belt of Truth
"Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist" (Ephesians 6:14). Truth is foundational - all other armor fastens to it. This speaks to honesty of heart and motive. When we're not truthful, we give the enemy an opening through deception.
The Breastplate of Righteousness
This protects our heart from the "death blow" that often comes through discouragement. We must keep our hearts pure and open to God, especially during moments of crisis when questions arise.
Feet Fitted with the Gospel of Peace
Like ancient warriors who wore sandals with nails to grip the ground, we need stability so we don't lose ground in battle. The Gospel of peace stabilizes believers and guides our will as we advance God's kingdom.
The Shield of Faith
"In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one" (Ephesians 6:16). Ancient shields were the size of doors, providing full protection for warriors on the front lines. Our faith is our first line of defense.
These shields were made of iron covered with leather and dipped in water. When fiery arrows came, the water would extinguish them. Similarly, we must soak our minds in the "water of the Word" so that the enemy's attacks don't lodge in our hearts.Like ancient warriors who wore sandals with nails to grip the ground, we need stability so we don't lose ground in battle. The Helmet of Salvation
This protects our mind, keeping our thoughts focused on truth rather than on what discourages or exhausts us.
The Sword of the Spirit
"Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God" (Ephesians 6:17). This is the only offensive weapon in our armor. The Greek word actually means "dagger," indicating we need God's Word for close-up attacks - those thoughts that come when we're alone or vulnerable.
"For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart" (Hebrews 4:12).

The Power of Prayer in Spiritual Warfare
"And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests" (Ephesians 6:18). Prayer is the most strategic battlefield for all of us regarding life's issues. We need to be led by God's heart in our prayers, going beyond our own understanding to discern what God really wants us to pray for.
Sometimes we think we should pray for one thing, but God wants us to pray for something entirely different. This requires sensitivity to the Holy Spirit and a willingness to align our will with God's will, not the other way around.

Taking Your Stand
When Joshua encountered the commander of the Lord's army near Jericho, he asked, "Are you for us or for our enemies?" The angel replied, "Neither, but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come" (Joshua 5:13-14).
This teaches us that God isn't obligated to align Himself with our plans. Instead, we need to align ourselves with His purposes. We must move beyond simply wanting God to bless our will and instead seek to discern and follow His will.
The emphasis throughout Scripture is clear: we must take a stand. Don't just go through the motions - stand for your family, stand for your loved ones, stand for what is right and true. In our generation, it's increasingly difficult to take a stand, but our convictions must be formed by what God speaks, not by popular opinion.

Victory Is Already Yours
Just as God gave Jericho to Joshua before the battle began, God has already given you victory over the battles you're facing. The Israelites had to walk around the city seven times, shouting and following God's specific instructions, but the victory was declared before they ever took the first step.
You don't have to stay up at night carrying the burden of issues in your life. You don't have to be constantly defeated by anxiety, bitter memories, or antagonistic thoughts. God wants you healed all the way through - in your mind, thinking, and memories.

Life Application
This week, challenge yourself to identify any battle you've been carrying that God doesn't want you to deal with anymore. Ask yourself: "Is there a place where the enemy has been taunting me for a long time, but God has already given me the victory and I need to walk in that now?"
Begin each day by consciously putting on the full armor of God. Remember that you cannot fight these battles in your own strength - you need God's power filling you. Take your stand declaring God's victory over every area that has caused you anxiety or heaviness.
Consider these questions as you apply this teaching:
Remember, you are more than a conqueror through Christ. You don't have to be concerned about past failures or what others have said or done to you. God is your senior partner, and with Him, you can walk forward in complete victory over every attack of the enemy.

Consider these questions as you apply this teaching:
- Am I trying to fight spiritual battles with natural weapons?
- What areas of my life am I "paying the bully" instead of standing in God's victory?
- Do I have a regular devotional life that soaks my mind in God's Word?
- Am I holding onto bitter memories or wounds that God wants to heal?
- Where do I need to stop fighting against people and recognize the real spiritual battle?
Remember, you are more than a conqueror through Christ. You don't have to be concerned about past failures or what others have said or done to you. God is your senior partner, and with Him, you can walk forward in complete victory over every attack of the enemy.
