Reaching Our Community
Dr. Bill Shuler
Generation Z is flooding into churches across America, seeking authentic faith communities where people genuinely follow Jesus. At Capital Life Church, we're witnessing this movement firsthand as young people look for churches that invite others to Christ and celebrate baptisms regularly. This revival isn't just about attendance—it's about authentic faith that transforms lives and communities.
What Does It Mean to Serve Others Sacrificially?
The mission of Capital Life Church centers on three pillars: loving God authentically, growing together intentionally, and serving others sacrificially. But what does sacrificial service actually look like in practice?
Paul Harvey once observed that "the church has stopped being fishers of men and has become keepers of the aquarium." Too often, churches become corporate entities focused on programs rather than people, jobs rather than Jesus. True sacrificial service goes beyond religious duty to authentic relationship and genuine care for others.

How Should Christians Be Witnesses in Their Communities?
Acts 1:8 provides the blueprint: "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. And you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
A witness testifies and gives evidence. Christians should be ready at any moment to explain their hope and connect people with God. This starts locally—in Jerusalem—right where we live and work, then extends to surrounding regions and ultimately to the ends of the earth.

What Does the Bible Say About Loving Others Through Action?
First John 3:16-18 gives us clear direction: "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth."
Jesus Modeled Sacrificial Love
Jesus laid down His life for us, modeling how we should act toward others. If Christ went to the cross for us, there should be no limits to how much we're willing to help others. The greatest commandment combines loving God with loving our neighbors as ourselves—you cannot truly love God without loving your neighbor well.
God Uses Our Resources to Meet Others' Needs
What we have isn't truly ours—it's on loan from God. We're called to be good stewards, not hoarders. Like the parable of the talents, we should invest what God gives us for His kingdom rather than burying it. This includes our time, finances, and abilities.
Actions Speak Louder Than Words
God calls us to move beyond words to concrete actions. In Acts 6, the early church chose Spirit-filled people to distribute food to widows—not because serving food was less important than preaching, but because both required God's heart and power.
Why Does Jesus Connect Mercy with Salvation?
In Matthew 25:31-46, Jesus separates the sheep from the goats based on how they treated "the least of these"—feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting prisoners, caring for the sick. Those who served others inherited the kingdom, while those who didn't were turned away.
This doesn't contradict salvation by grace—it reveals that authentic faith naturally produces merciful actions. If you truly know Jesus, it will be evident in how you live and love people in practical, tangible ways.

Who Is Our Mission Field?
Understanding our community helps us serve more effectively. Within a three-mile radius of many urban churches, the demographics reveal:
This presents unique opportunities and challenges for building authentic community and serving sacrificially.
- Highly educated population (76.5% have bachelor's degrees vs. 34% nationally)
- Young professionals (largest age group: 25-34)
- High percentage of singles (49% never married vs. 34% nationally)
- Diverse ethnicities and languages
- Transient population due to government and military work

How Can We Serve Our Community Practically?
Effective community service takes many forms:
These ministries provide more than material help—they offer fellowship, prayer, and opportunities to share the gospel through relationship.
- Food assistance programs for the homeless
- School supply drives for local elementary schools
- Vacation Bible School for neighborhood children
- Summer camps and youth programs
- Holiday assistance for families in need
- Benevolence funds for church members facing hardship

What Does Authentic Faith Look Like?
Romans 12:9-13 paints a picture of sincere love in action: "Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord's people who are in need. Practice hospitality."
Authentic faith maintains spiritual fervor while actively caring for others' needs. It combines devotion to God with practical service to people.

Where Should the Church Make Its Stand?
George McLeod's powerful words remind us where Christ belongs: "I simply argue that the cross be raised again at the center of the marketplace as well as on the steeple of the church... Jesus was not crucified in a cathedral between two candles, but on a cross between two thieves on the town garbage heap at a crossroad of politics... because that is where he died, and that is what he died about, and that is where Christ's people ought to be."
The church must engage the messy realities of life—politics, poverty, brokenness—because that's where Jesus went and that's where people need hope.

Life Application
This week, move beyond words to action in your faith. Identify two or three specific people you can invite to church before the end of the year, especially during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons when people are more open to spiritual conversations.
Look for practical ways to serve others sacrificially—whether through your church's community ministries or individual acts of kindness. Remember that your time, resources, and abilities are on loan from God to be invested in His kingdom.
Ask yourself these questions:

Ask yourself these questions:
- How am I currently serving others sacrificially, not just with words but with actions?
- What material possessions or resources has God given me that I could use to meet others' needs?
- Who in my sphere of influence needs to hear about Jesus, and how can I authentically share His love with them?
- Am I maintaining spiritual fervor while actively caring for people around me?
True faith isn't just about church attendance or religious activities—it's about knowing Jesus so authentically that His love flows through you to transform your community and world.
