Unlock Your Superpower: Words
Pastor Lisa Shuler
Words are not neutral. They have consequences and power - the power of life and death. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 18:21 that "the tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruits." This reveals an incredible truth: your words are your superpower, capable of creating or destroying, healing or harming.
Where Do Our Words Begin?
Before words leave our mouths, they begin as thoughts. Those recurring conversations you have with yourself or others that never seem to resolve? They start with thought patterns that create neural pathways in your brain - like walking the same path through a jungle until it becomes visible from above.
If we want to control our words, we must first address our thoughts. The Bible speaks about "taking our thoughts captive" and "renewing our minds" because changing our words requires changing our thinking first.

Words Create Your Destiny
Your words are so powerful that what you speak is actively leading you toward your destination. They're not just expressions - they're directional forces in your life.
Think about a small child learning to speak. They start with a few words and gradually develop their vocabulary. Similarly, we're trying to learn God's language, but often our words are connected to our culture, family background, or surroundings rather than to God Himself.
John 1:1 tells us, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Words matter to our Creator because they're part of His nature.

What Are Empty Words?
In Matthew 12, Jesus warns that we'll give account for every empty word we speak. The Greek term used here (rhema argon) literally means "not working" words - useless, unproductive, careless utterances that:
These include thoughtless chatter, gossip, slander, and rash promises we don't intend to keep.
- Don't build up others
- Don't bring truth
- Bear no fruit
- Are spoken without love or responsibility

Words That Heal or Destroy
Proverbs 12:18 says, "The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing." Your tongue can be like a surgical tool - it can cut deep and bring death, or it can bring healing.
Proverbs 16:24 compares gracious words to honeycomb - "sweet to the soul and healing to the bones." Historically, honey was used medicinally to heal wounds and infections. Your encouraging words can have the same healing power in someone's life.

The Consequences of Our Words
Remember Moses? God told him to speak to the rock to provide water for the thirsty Israelites. Instead, Moses struck the rock in anger. Water still came, but Moses faced serious consequences - he couldn't enter the Promised Land, all because he didn't speak the words God commanded.
Small But Powerful
James 3:3-6 compares the tongue to:
Our words can turn situations "on a dime" like controlling a horse, or they can slowly redirect our life's course like a ship's rudder. Either way, they're incredibly powerful despite their small size.
- A bit in a horse's mouth - small but able to control the whole animal
- A ship's rudder - tiny compared to the vessel but determines its direction
- A spark that sets a forest ablaze - capable of massive destruction
Our words can turn situations "on a dime" like controlling a horse, or they can slowly redirect our life's course like a ship's rudder. Either way, they're incredibly powerful despite their small size.
How Words Shape Us and Others
Ephesians 4:29 instructs: "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."
Every conversation is either tearing down or building up. You have the power to break generational patterns of negative speech and bring healing through your words.
Science confirms this spiritual truth. Positive words activate the brain's frontal lobes, enhancing focus and peace. Negative words trigger the amygdala - the brain's fight-or-flight center - leading to anger and emotional reactions.

The Thomas Edison Story
Thomas Edison's teacher once sent a note home saying Edison was "addled" (mentally ill) and couldn't return to school. His mother read the note to him differently, saying: "Your son is a genius. This school is too small for him and doesn't have good enough teachers. Please teach him yourself."
Years later, after his mother died, Edison found the original note. His mother's decision to speak life rather than death shaped not only Edison's future but our world through his inventions - the light bulb, phonograph, film technologies, and electric power distribution.

We Need God's Help
James 3:8-10 admits a hard truth: "No human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil full of deadly poison." We need divine help to control our words.
Psalm 141:3 offers the perfect prayer: "Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips."
St. Augustine, an influential early Christian theologian, had these words carved on his dinner table: "He who speaks evil of an absent man or woman is not welcome at this table." This principle should guide our speech in all settings.

Life Application
This week, take these three steps to harness the superpower of your words:
Remember James 1:19: "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry."
- Ask God daily to guard your mouth. Make it your morning prayer: "Lord, set a guard over my mouth today."
- Pause before speaking. Check your thoughts and ask: Does this heal? Does this build up? Does this shape what I want to be shaped?
- Stay connected to God so your words carry His life. Maintain your connection through regular prayer and Bible reading.
Remember James 1:19: "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry."
Questions to Consider:
- What recurring negative thought patterns do I need to address before they become harmful words?
- In what relationships do my words tend to tear down rather than build up?
- How might my words be creating my current reality and shaping my future?
- What generational patterns of speech might God be calling me to break?
- How can I better align my words with God's truth this week?
Your words are seeds that will bear fruit. What kind of harvest are you planting today?
