Sermon Recap | Sept. 22, 2024

Throw Yourself Into the Work

Returning to Oral Roberts University after a decade brought back a flood of memories. It was a place where I as a former campus pastor, experienced profound spiritual growth. This visit reminded me of the importance of community, support, and the impact of faithful service. Today, I want to share a message titled "Throw Yourself Into the Work," encouraging us to embrace our God-given callings with passion and dedication.

A Call to Serve

The Power of Community and Support**
Reflecting on Lisa and my time at ORU, it's clear that the support of others played a crucial role in our journey. Sarah Touche, a former student chaplain, and her husband were among our first supporters when we moved to the DC metro area. Their belief in our vision and mission was instrumental in our early days. This highlights the importance of community and the impact of faithful supporters in fulfilling God's work.

Embracing Change and Growth
Visiting ORU, we saw significant changes, including new state-of-the-art buildings. This transformation was made possible by the generosity of believers like the founders of Hobby Lobby, who have donated over $300 million to the university. Their example of giving and supporting God's work is inspiring and challenges us to consider how we can contribute to the growth and advancement of God's kingdom.

The Importance of Obedience and Faithfulness
During our visit, we attended a chapel service where students were passionately worshiping God. This reminded me of my own experiences as a student body chaplain, where I felt a deep desire to serve God. It's a powerful reminder that God calls each of us to serve in unique ways, and our obedience and faithfulness can have a lasting impact on others.

A Personal Story of Urgency and Love
I shared a personal story about my brother, Todd, who suffered a stroke. Despite the distance, I urged him to seek medical attention, and it was a reminder of the urgency and importance of showing love and care for our loved ones. This experience reinforced the idea that we should not delay in doing what God has called us to do.

Throw Yourself Into the Work
The central message of today's sermon is to "throw yourself into the work." This means rejecting the mindset of "I'll get around to it someday" and instead embracing the opportunities God places before us. Whether it's serving in small ways or taking on significant responsibilities, every act of service is valuable in God's eyes.

Biblical Examples of Faithful Service
Jesus taught us the importance of humble service by washing His disciples' feet. This act of humility and love serves as a powerful example for us to follow. In Luke 22:27, Jesus said, "I am among you as one who serves." This statement challenges us to adopt a servant's heart and prioritize the needs of others.

Stewarding Our Gifts and Resources
Ephesians 2:10 reminds us that we are God's workmanship, created to do good works. Each of us has unique gifts, talents, and resources that God has entrusted to us. We are called to steward these gifts with excellence, whether it's our time, possessions, or influence. By doing so, we contribute to the advancement of God's kingdom.

Life Application

As we reflect on today's message, let's consider how we can apply it to our lives this week. Here are a few questions to ponder:

1. How can I use my gifts and talents to serve others and advance God's kingdom?
2. What opportunities has God placed before me that I have been delaying or neglecting?
3. How can I be more intentional in showing love and support to those around me?
In conclusion, let's embrace the call to serve with passion and dedication. By throwing ourselves into the work, we can make a significant impact on the lives of others and advance God's kingdom. May we be inspired by the examples of faithful service around us and commit to using our gifts and resources for God's glory.
